QUESTION: Who was Pope Pius XII?

ANSWER: Eugenio Pacelli was born in 1876, and he died in 1958. Pacelli served as a papal nuncio to Germany in the 1920s. He became a cardinal in 1929, and in 1930 became Vatican Secretary of State. In his role as Vatican Secretary of State, Pacelli was responsible for the Vatican’s concordats with Austria and Nazi Germany in 1933. Pacelli was elected pope in 1939, and took the name Pius XII. During World War II, the Vatican, under the leadership of Pope Pius XII, lent its support not only to Nazi Germany, but also to all the Roman Catholic Fascist regimes in Europe – even providing a Jesuit monsignor (i.e., Josef Tiso) to serve as the leader of Fascist Slovakia. (Vatican support was especially noticeable in Fascist Croatia, where two Jesuit archbishops – Aloysius Stepinac and Ivan Saric – choreographed the genocide that took the lives of up to one million innocent Serb Orthodox Christians.) Then, at the end of World War II, the Vatican, under the leadership of Pope Pius XII, helped thousands of Nazi and Fascist war criminals to escape via the Vatican Ratlines to safe locations in other countries such as the USA, Argentina, and other Latin American countries.

James Carroll, writer for the Atlanta Monthly, tells us: [Ed.: John Cornwell’s book, “Hitler’s Pope”, is] a devastating refutation of the claim that this Pope’s [Ed.: i.e., Pius XII’s (pope: 1939-1958)] diplomacy can in any way be characterized as wisdom. Instead of a portrait of a man worthy of sainthood, Cornwell [Ed.: in his book “Hitler’s Pope”] lays out the story of a narcissistic, power-hungry manipulator [Ed.: i.e., Pope Pius XII] who was prepared to lie, to appease, and to collaborate in order to accomplish his ecclesiastical purpose – which was not to save lives or even to protect the Catholic Church, but, more narrowly, to protect and advance the power of the PAPACY.”

Saul Friedlander, writer for the Los Angeles Times, tells us: “As [Ed.: John] Cornwell brilliantly demonstrates [Ed.: in his book “Hitler’s Pope”], Pius XII brought the authoritarianism and the centralization of his [Ed.: Papal] predecessors to their most extreme stageNowadays we may not know what a saint should be, but we do know what a saint should not be – a man of narrow spirit and heart, a man who could not find at the very least a ‘candid word’ when millions of human beings from all corners of Europe, some of them from under his own windows, were led to their systematic extermination.”

Let us never forget that pro-Nazi, anti-Jewish Pope Pius XII – a man whom some in the Roman Catholic Church want to “canonize” (i.e., to make – to declare – a “saint” of the Roman Catholic Church) – supported Nazi Germany, and was the “boss” of the men who supervised and operated the Vatican Ratlines!

In 1955 Pope Pius XII and Cardinal Spellman (the Roman Catholic Archbishop of New York) installed Ngo Dinh Diem, a Roman Catholic, as president in South Vietnam. Avro Manhattan, on page 108 of his book, “The Dollar and the Vatican”, tells us: “The role played by the Vatican in the Vietnam War (1956-1976) was not only important, it was decisive. Since without the Vatican such a war would have never occurred.” Thus, Pope Pius XII and Cardinal Spellman were responsible for the deaths of over 58,000 Americans in Vietnam!
